Serious about cake pops

Pop bakery A book with a bookmark of cake pops. While the credit for the classic pop goes to Bakerella, the author has taken the idea forward applying the dynamic cake pop to faux icecream and popsicle pops. The vibrant colours in the book bring about the festive atmosphere hinted in the title of the book and on the cover. Tiered cake pops is a cool idea. Cake slice pops, animal pops, aeroplane pops... Many ideas like this. Now your kid doesnt have to have one single idea for a cake or choose between the many. You can make all of them as cake pops in one cake. A tiered Display stand for the cake pops and others show how they can add to the aura of the pops and also how pops can build on the themes involved. Paper roses is a new idea unlike the pompoms which has already been introduced by Martha S. I knew Bunting  only as a bird until now. The first buntings I remember are from independence day celebrations in India where the flags are stuck onto a rope made from jute

Something on pink (singer)

This book has ideas of creating your favourite pop stars as cake pops. It is insightful to see how you can colour the hair of your stars by dipping them into the colour tub at an angle. Its a skill display much like the piping where by some magic you can make a fusilli effect.

How to enhance your cupcake

I was very taken with the page which has the basic equipment numbered and explained. I couldnt imagine what could be done with them. And then comes the barrage of examples with how to achieve the desired visual effects. Making moulds for the decorations opens a whole new world where in you can design the decoration to sit the theme of the party you want to cater to. With the cutters and stamps, the author shows how stunning effects can be brought about. Some decorations like 'poppy crops' leave the cupcake top feeling no less than a canvas for an eager artist to show off their creative skills. Not only are you introduced to new equipment but to new ingredients like piping gel and their dramatic effect. 'Safari stars' is a very creative assemblage. Lindys cakes bakeme

Ina garten foolproof recipes

The concept of foolproof recipes is great. In the foreword, Ina G's recipe focus sounds homely but looking at the boxed ingredients on the side of the recipe say otherwise. mustard gruyere batons  look good. Curry puffs too can be presented in this shape. They could also be done in the 'crab strudel' way. That is cut diagonally. Come to think of it, the curry puffs can be presented in the spring roll, cake roll, palmier method. Remember the fun way of making a purse with a handkerchief rolled in the palmier way and then turned upside down. Rolled again. Crispy roasted kale raspberry crumble bars  - dough used in filling too. Salted caramel brownies Viennese Iced coffee

Some things food

I understood what  clean eating  is after seeing a 'Boston cream' recipe with ingredients I have never used Brown rice flour Evaporated cane juice and  Baking with coconut flour .  Sweet Potato Pie Truffles  can be made with the coconut flour. We have lots of sweet potatoes, a baking sheet full with no breathing space for them.  Sweet Potato Ice Cream  that can be made without an icecream maker is one way to use them. The magazine is not all about unfamiliar ingredients. When I read the phrase 'schedule is jam packed', I thought of traffic jam and the lack of empty space. Traffic jam resonates with being stuck in the stickiness of fruit  jam . I wonder if the traffic jam came to be because of it, but the dictionary confirms that fruit jam is jam 2, a special case of verb jam 1. This morning I had  Rusk  with tea. My daughter too found it easy to bite it with her lips and eat, made soft dunked in tea. And then it struck, why Rusk is nothing but poor man

A recipe that uses lefftovers and doesnt have to be done right away

I have skimped on egg yolk and cream cheese in  No Limoncello tiramisu . These are just what I need for  Cream cheese cookie dough  mentioned in her Everyday magazine. Also they need to be chilled and can be stored as dough for upto 3 weeks. Thats lot of time and time is what I need to mix it all up and make it a dough. I have read that it matters to cookies if the butter is creamed or just melted in a microwave.  Creaming butter by hand .

No Limoncello Tiramisu

My mind is set on  Lidia's Limoncello Tiramisu  but with substitution and deletion. I have made an original recipe earlier with the marsala, saviordi lady fingers and mascarpone. I want to make a next door girl version of it. I have seen  homemade mascarpone  recipe before. But looking at this recipe I want to substitute it with  Cream cheese an cream . This is a good time to make  homemade ladyfingers . Yesterday at Costco, I saw a well package Pallini Limoncello with 2 glasses inside. Universe! I'm not giving in. Lidia's recipe seems to be labyrinthic. Lets see where we end up. What happens when your substitute needs to be substituted? It being Christmas eve, the usual tiny cartons of heavy cream are sold. I didnt want my fridge to be the heavy cream capital of the city. To see what happens, half-and-half was my object under test. Its one thing to find a recipe for home made stuff and another to have comments that it didnt work. At the time I found the comments,

Chilli paratha

Fruit cake

This years recipe  Holiday fruitcake . Instead of half grape juice I used 1/4 cup water which always gets me into trouble. This cake without buter wanted to become a pudding, nothing heat couldnt fix and ended up a cake that began to crust.  Last christmas cake  was good with butter. If you hate fruit cake this  article  is for you.

Hon Machi

Long time ago when I went to Hon Machi, I was in my own world and didnt realise that the  Teppanyaki  chef through a pea to be caught. This time I know, meant to be caught not by hand but by mouth. As does the squeezed oil go into the mouth of partyers. A story that I have to regale everytime is the Chris McFarley's Beverly Ninja movie scene of being the chef with a piece of meat on his forehead. There was one sauce that I asked seconds for. My husband a mustard fan likes stronger kind of sauces, so I was wary of trying it. Once hooked, I wanted it on everything. The onion volcano is kind of cute. Why recall only the good food memories? Why not recall those utter failures. Inspired from the edamame salad at Hon Machi, my husband got some peas to be boiled and shelled when ready to eat. To his and everyone's surprise, what should we see when we opened the pods, pea free.

Lemon wind fall

A friend stopped by one morning to drop off some lemons at our house. They started green but are now ripe yellow. when my husband picked up lemons at the grocery store, I had to remind him that we have many at home. So far, I have made  Lemon curd . My friend sent me another recipe too but this is the dump all together at once and get done with it version. Too buttery for me even after reducing it by 2 tbsp. The lemon tree owner liked it and had it with jaggery rice krispies too. Gold cake  for an infant's welcome. Initially this  lemon bars  recipe seemed tedious. But having done it, you dont even need to flour your hands to spread the crust on the pan. I have a windfall of parchment paper too from a moving friend (all the laundry baskets, tables, chairs memorabilia from moved friends). If the list for the filling seems double, that is with a good reason for an alternative light version. This morning when I opened the fridge I only found 2 eggs and the recipe wanted four. I r

Lettuce

We bought Romaine Lettuce and iceberg lettuce from Walmart.  Lettuce  wrap was a hit with me at PFChangs. It hasnt failed to capture my husband. In preparation of the day's salad with rotisserie chicken and cranberries, I asked the lettuce be cut. But when I saw that the leaves were in a size where they can be stuffed and rolled, I saw how you dont have to fight with your fork in gathering. And how difficult it would be with chop sticks. that would be the reason for the lettuce cups/wraps from China. This morning I was thinking of stuffing the lettuce wraps with noodles. Here's  recipes for lettuce wraps . We stuffed them with opo squash curry and liked it.

Thanksgiving and food

This  white fruit cake on the left  was so good at making a special day memorable. Our friend cooked chicken liver. When he was boiling it with turmeric for a while, I thought he was done. That was just prepping for the next stage. Farm chicken. My pista burfi debacle now makes up for the lack of coffee in the house. In the afternoon, I am having pista milk like badaam(almond) milk. Another friend made  Pineapple kesari

fall cookie

A relative of mine likes  Naan khatai . She asked me for a recipe. I tried the recipe in the link and she seemed to like it. The egg wash after the baking gave the naan khatais fall- pumpkin look. Why does steam make bread light and crusty it slows down the cooking process

Diwali potluck

At potluck for Diwali, I had pulihora with mustard powder in it. Wow, the texture and the taste jump a little. I made curry puffs with Safeway phyllo sheets without buttering the insides for the first batch. It didnt seem right. So the next batch went with oil in between layers. Safeway mini pastry shells can be served without baking. It was a quick and pretty dessert when I filled them with sweetened shredded coconut mixed with condensed milk. Murkulu, pheni, pav bhaaji, tomato curry

Juba is a river shared by Ethiopia and Somalia

that flows into the Indian ocean. Its well that  Juba  in Tempe used to be Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant has now turned into a Somalian restaurant retaining its Ethiopian menu too. We tried  Chicken sukhaar . the rice with it too was very flavourful. we introduced a friend to the Injera bread made from Teff. He is a runner, so we took pride in introducin him to the magical grain. The injera bread with its aerated voids would soak up the gravy of the curry, when I placed some tzaziki sauce on it, I could see the white seep to the other side. It all ended in the Indian belly as much as an ocean.

Tomato chutney

Today my husband made a chutney with tomatoes. Recipe soon to come. It looks like what his mom and sis make and tastes different but I am not afraid its not going to last long. I want it with everything. Khasta keema naan at The Dhaba, Tempe is flavourful with coriander seeds, fennel, minced lamb. I didnt know that  khasta- kachori  has moong dal stuffing in it. Khakhra Ragi murukku . Store bought had lots of spice in it.

Breadcrumb marketing

Fresh pumpkins ahead Fresh tomatoes ahead Fresh potatoes ahead After the first banner you wonder why or how and then you get that there is a Farmer' market ahead. I want to know the  Marketing technique . But look at the techniques, how in an ordinary day you can be bombarded with flyposting, introductory rate, on hold messaging, wait marketing, Vendor lock in.
At Costco, We tried chocolate covered cherries. What is neat about these  Dragees  is that they remind you of cherries with their colour. The chocolate is good but the cherry flavour on the top is not very natural. Just like the maraschino cherries on wonderful cakes as topping. Like a evil warding black spot on a sweet face.

From basics to getting crazy baking

Persian walnut cookies If you look at Pastries by Pierre Hermes, the big list of ingredients will push away even the interested from baking. On the other end of spectrum is Robert BlakesLee's 'Your time to bake', as accesible as 'your time to cook'. The first 1/6th of the book lists all the techniques in baking. Uptil here its a guide for the beginners. I was very taken by the chocoroon brownies - brownies with a sweet coconut bottom. I made them. I also made Mexican wedding cakes and walnut puffs. They were all liked by friends and family. It was fun getting hands covered in powdered sugar. Initially when I put the hot cookies in the powder, it formed a thin glaze on the cookies. All the recipes come with a step by step instructions and pictures of the preparation. With simple gadget like a pastry tamper  , the author's steps will get you started on making tartlets in your muffin pans.

Mixed bag of recipes

Today we had a picnic with 'South Indian tiffins' as the theme. I chose  Biyyam pindi vundala upma  and  Plantain peas podimas . Everybody liked plantain podimas and  All occasion yellow cake  turned into chocolate cake with a cocoa powder sachet sticking out of a collection bowl. Into the cocoa cake went a My husband helped me in shaping the biyyam pindi into tiny rounds. He was very confident that it would all coagulate. That is what ensued and I ended up making poha.
