Wedding cakes

Authors blog The first I saw of  wedding cake  as a project is on smitten kitchen website, which gave me an idea that it is not a snap. A colleague's wife, an avid baker's recent project was a wedding cake. It needs time and obviously preservation, so freezing. The raspberry poking out of the whipped cream layer in the Italian wedding cake has sent me on a wild plucked goose chase. Shamrock farms has a 50% sale. what best time to buy whipping cream for the frosting. I made my first buy of cake flour At first I thought Bashas might not carry it and there it was one of those boxed things instead of the usual the paper bag things  with the sack look. A friend  has these kind of layered cakes for birthday parties. with her birthday in the offing, I thought it would be a great idea. I have been struggling with the whipped cream. Stabilizing. whew! The confectioners sugar was supposed to do that. It might be a better idea to just open the damned thing and fix the gears i

Switching when the tomatoes go in

Come Monday, the fridge has a party. Just when I was thinking that there couldnt be many ways of making cauliflower, heres a recipe of  cauliflower curry with spinach ginger . I have never added spinach to cauliflower. With Monday's abundance potatoes and spinach are there for use. My parents made dal on saturdays when there were no vegetables left. But when there are fewer vegetables, like everything looking like a nail to the one with hammer, the uses of veggies go up. Palak gobi sails.

Almond Chia cookies

Sesame fudge  uses tahini. Tahini can be  home made . The book has the origin of Tamarind as Tamar hindi - Indian date. Why should tangy tamarind be mistaken for dates when there are dates grown in India. Anediblemosaic  blog Pantry says - no sesame seeds. I ended up making pistachio sesame cookies. Only those werent what I had in my pantry. So they go by the name of Almond Chia cookies. If you are wondering where the almonds are. They are holding up the cookie like Atlas.  Barazek . I used my hand to make the dough into a ball. I wonder how adding sugar by way of syrup changes the cookie dynamics.                                                                                            The back side of the cookie When I first flipped through the pages of the book. The first dessert that piqued me was  Coconut semolina cake . Just recently I had  bakshalu  made with coconut and semolina. This needed baking. So I was interested in finding out the end resu

Something for a special person on a special occasion

Joconde The cake on the cover page which is all rolled up and made to the stand is the only trick that I have seen in another vintage cake book. Rest all of the cakes are full of novel ways of making interesting cakes. Cutting out conically, positioning a diagonally cut cuboid cake into a pyramid. The ingredients and the instruction run over a page, so it is not an everyday thing.

New and forgotten old

Dal bukhara . What fun it is to find a way to make something new with an ingredient you have never used that way. In this age of substitutes we forget the original ingredients of a recipe.
