Classic Cookies with Modern Twists

Foodprintstyle Washboard cookies Not so washboard cookies. I didnt give them the tine treatment. While dipping the cookies in coconut, I though why not Chia seeds, and thats how we have those dots on the cookies. The recipe in the book is slightly different from the link here as it has coconut-lime twist. I love the cover of the 'Classic Cookies with Modern twist' book by ellen Jackson and the pictures too. Wish there were pictures for every recipe like the other reviewers felt too. Lack of some pictures was glaring, because its not like there are no pages. Each recipe takes two to three pages and it seemed like the recipe you liked wasnt matching the picture because it never made it into the book. The smaller size of the book makes it, easy to tackle. I tried the washboard cookies. Liked the flavour and texture.My little one too got involved in mixing and rolling them out onto the cookie sheet. Next up might be snickerdoodles. I came across Layne Mosler's work in  Best womens travel writing vol 8   by  Lavinia Spalding Mango butter White dog cafe The idea of taking dining tips from cabbies is interesting. The Cabbies in all the three different places that the author has been display a good understanding of how their nations/cities work. The author has a way of expressing herself with sentences like my emergency contact is millions of miles away. The Buenos Aires section is well put together. But after her disenchantment with that place, it never again reaches that peak with her subsequent adventures in new places. If Buenos Aires was her astronomical moon flight, then every other attempt dims out in comparision. Perfect as travel anthology essays. "The future never has the nerve to be the present completely without first trying things out, and that trying things out is hope" - Borges, "The Full extent of Hope" essay.

Stir

sweetamandine Some words take long to make sense. I never understood the Joan Didion's 'The Year of Magical thinking' but when the author Jessica Fechtor uses 'Magical thinking' it made sense. Pizza Schleifer. My daughter too wanted to name her sister - Milk, Chocolate. In 'Stir: My Broken Brain and the Meals that Brought me Home',There are recipes. There is food. There is gathering. What the reader goes home after reading this book is a perception of food's role in sustaining life both physically and emotionally. We have to eat everyday. They say that death and taxes are certain but so are meals and laundry. The author focuses on how getting involved in cooking is an affirmation that you are making it to eat, so there is a future of that. And its this vision that gets her through the tough time of dealing with a brain aneurysm. Passion Food

I have read many books about restaurants but never of any by a married couple. This book starts from the idea of starting a restaurant to actually get it thriving. Reading of the Pizzeria Bianco, I could imagine the who scene, having been there in the waiting line for too long. Like the author says, their daily diet of Pizza might be a kids dream but the work they had to do for it isnt envious. Its a humorous look at the whole, coming up with ideas and going on the wild goose chase they take you on.

Thats to say that a recipe has been followed. How many times you think you are done with cooking and think what is this ground cashews doing here in the mortar. Once in a while 'second-person narrative' is effective but that in a whole book is insane. That said once the author got into the business of making things, the motion in the kitchen is infectious. If you have read memoirs of chefs, then you will know of different people at each of the food stations. You will also know that a chefs life is exhausting. But Michael Gibney in his unique 24 hour format, has shown whats in a day of a chef's life and how it starts fresh every morning. Boquerones Sapori Forte "cook the carrots under a cartouch in bay-and-juniper-scented carrot juice" sounds like poetry to me Mustard roasted potatoes

Good cooking from India by Shehnaz Mehta Ananas Shrikhand Date yogurt  Pitha It being ugadhi time, we had raw mangoes leftover and some chana dal paste. Aloo Aam  (4.3.14) Potatoes with raw mangoes. it had slight tang, but couldnt find any mango pieces. I had put less than 1/3 mango to begin with, just to play safe with tang. I made mamidikaya pappu (mango dal) with chana dal. Usually its made with toor dal. Overnight the mangoes lent a nice tang taste to the dal. Sabudana Cha Usarh 1. Sago soaked in yogurt and then seasoned with fried peanuts and sesame seeds, green chillies. (4.3.14) 2. With leftover sago, I tried it with almonds, chili powder, salt and raw mangoes cut into little pieces.  It is an addictive snack. I could relate the taste to sabudana vadiyalu  3. Making organic your league

Recently a colleague had explained why organic is the way to go. So my interest in the book peaked when it said Frugal Budget. Its a simple but effective list of things we can do in terms of procuring organic food. Growing your own is probably the coolest idea. Monsanto and farmer related cases regarding seeds are very interesting to follow, but I never spent time in thinking that organic label would not just be limited to the method of growing but to the seeds themselves. I found the easing into organic food idea starting from whats in the fridge very practical. Paragraphs with sub titles format worked well in the book. I find that the reader is kept at a distance through the formal style. Few recipes shared or an anecdote or two about why the author made the transformation would let me engage with the book. As soon as I read 'Advice for Eating Well on A Tight Budget, from a Mom who's been there' article on NPR, I got to making the  Garlicky kale salad
