Yogurt with Exotic fruits

Yogurt with exotic fruits but not processed taste. Who wouldnt want to try it? My main reason for trying complimentary Evolution Fresh™ Inspired by Dannon® Greek Yogurt from Bzzagent is its health factor. The fruit at the bottom tastes natural, nothing off putting. The yogurt too is smoother than most Greek yogurt.  Great snack for children. I didnt know about Evolution Fresh before this. Glad to know of their innovative cold-pressed juice preservation. Fry's has Evolution Fresh™ Inspired by Dannon® Greek Yogurt on sale.

Sprouted Seed Co Quinoa

This is the third brand of Quinoa seeds that I have had after Costco truroots and Viva Labs. I like the Quinoa seeds by Sprouted Seed Co by far the best. Quinoa benefits are common knowledge now. As soon as I opened the packet, it smelled like Quinoa. I cooked 2 cups of quinoa with 4 cups of water. Just towards the end, it seemed like it needed 1 more cup of water. And then it was so fluffy the next day too. I used the cooked Quinoa in Aloo cutlet/tikki  . If you heard of the Quinoa masala burger liked by the Obamas, then you can now make it too starting with the Quinoa. I had it with curries too and liked it. If you have a Quinoa novice who is convinced of Quinoa's benefits but is not able to get over the nutty flavour, then Quinoa Seeds by Sprouted Seed Co is your best bet.

Pureed spinach omelette

Today when I looked at the wilted spinach, other than the reminder to be careful of using spinach soon. I got another idea. Of pureeing spinach into omelette, that ways its easy to mix too. Made an omelette with  Chinese Cabbage  this morning. Few weeks ago had, Bok Choy salad with  Okami sauce .

Goji Berries

I heard of Goji Berries from a super health aware friend. I tasted them at her place. When i had Viva Labs #1 Premium Himalayan Organic Goji Berries, I didnt need convincing of their health value. If you have them straight, these berries are a bit different from all the other berries we know. With the Goji Berry tea idea behind the packet, I tried it but found that I like the taste of them better as dried berries. Interestingly I have a bag of goji berries and a bag of cacao nibs on my desk. and that happens to be the best combination according to 'Superfoods : the Food and the Medicine of the Future' by David Wolfe. Its their added antioxidant effect.

Hemp protein powder

I have never had hemp protein before. After having Viva Labs - The Finest Organic Hemp Protein in warm milk, the closest I can liken it to is urad dal (Vigna mungo). The texture, taste and smell are very close to urad dal. If you dont like its grassy, nutty flavour - remember the mantra that it is a high quality protein. I have just started strength training, so I know this will do me good. Since this is a new product, I am slow on finding ways to use it. some good ways seem to be - in pancakes, smoothies, brownies. It ha a grassy flavour which can be masked with Viva Labs - Cocoa powder. In 'Ultimate Protein Powder - Think outside the Shake', Anna sward cautions that 'Like pea, rice and to a certain extent casein protein powder, hemp protein absorbs lot of liquid' . So remember this while making substitutes. I like Viva Labs pride in the making of heir product which reflects in every packet on on the labeling.

Vavilaku

Today a friend gave some dried eucalyptus, neem and vavilaku leaves. a bath with water boiled with these leaves is supposed to help postpartum pains.

Roasted Jalapeno and Thai Sweet chili protein bars

Roasted Jalapeno and Thai Sweet chili protein bars from Strong & KIND put the savoury back into snacks. Roasted Jalapeno Almond bar is a double bed of almonds with hot jalapenos. It reminded me of  Borugula vadiyalu . (The ones I'm thinking of are made with cooked rice. as a kid, I didnt like them because of the chili taste, but I bet I will love them now.) Thai Sweet Chili seems less spicy in the beginning, but the spice stacks up as you eat. Had these bars at a well expo. It was a Eat one. KIND one. So I get to eat one and share it with another kind person.

Eggs

As a kid, my brother got to have a boiled  Egg  everyday as he had cold most of the days. Otherwise it was scrambled egg curry or boiled egg pulusu as special when we had visitors on weekdays. Indian scrambled egg is different than the American. Neither consistent nor temperature sensitive.

Pumpkin

There lay on my desk, a very orange pumpkin. What was I going to do with it. I know that my family and village cook pumpkin curry during a celebration of the deity who appeared in our ancestors dream, during a drought time and told them to move to the current village for water. I thought I could use half for the curry and the rest for a dessert. I would have taken my husband's help for hacking the pumpkin but he was too busy with the garden. I did not realise that I had undertaken a huge program. Peeling and cutting the pumpkin is time consuming. The second dish from the bottom of the photo is sambhar. I had put in a home grown squash from a neighbor's garden into the sambhar. for once with the original looking seeds of the squash in sambhar, it looked like I cracked the code of sambhar. I cut pumpkin cubes into sambhar. But still there was more than half. For the curry, third from the bottom, I cut them still smaller and boiled them for a while.

Matzo brei

There's always Matzo in our house. I came across   Matzo brei  in My First Passover board book. It introduced me to new things like  Chametz  and  Charoset . Similar to Kothu Paratha.

Spruce up your icecream too

Tastes good. Not heavy. Not too sweet. Dominating flavour is that of orange candy. The colourful pieces can be used  as accessories for icecream party. And the hanging minion. If your kids have played the minions and bananas game online or seen the movie, here comes another paraphernalia to the collection.

Maggi Pazzta cooks fast and tastes fine. Couldnt tell that it is made from Suji.

Preserving food

I was talking about making sabudana appadam this long weekend. Then there was talk about how left over rice can be dried and fried later. My dad said that in the olden days, after a function (an event), when there was lot of leftover rice it was sent to a man with a special  kumpati  where dried rice is sort of popped and then flavoured with spices and seasonings and consumed as snacks for about a month. Recently my neighbour told me how cauliflower is dried and then used in winter by soaking it in water. I have also been talking about making  Mamidi kaya thokku . Its a tradition and I want to follow it. Although in small amounts. A 3$ mango is waiting for this make over. At home, thokku making day was special. We would finish our daily breakfast and activities and sit down for the big activity. A special time was when our relative came over to make allam thokku. we had enjoyed it at her house and now we could have our own stash for the year made by the expert. But involves peelin
