As long as you can stir

Add white flour as long as you can stir from Art and appetite This  recipe poem is presented as a parag else where. with flour and stir rhyming in the title. May be all those recipes can be turned into rhymes.

Quinoa cookies

I wanted to make some healthy snacks. yes I need wheat flour and counting the time I said to myself, aloud and the inhabitants of the house, they say they heard it four times. I have quinoa. And a recipe, Quinoa chocolate cookies   called for almond milk. So follows a mix-up of 1 cup all purpose flour 1/3 cup almond milk 1 mashed banana 2 tbsps of oil 3 tbsps of cocoa powder 1 cup cooked quinoa If you have baked enough, in your soup days, you'll remember the cake that fell flat and you called it pudding. The above recipe results in that version of cookies. The test for these cookies is 'snack time' tomorrow. Will they stand up? And after the grocery trip, there will be crackers . Verdict: In the morning, I gave her 2 cookies. She held one, the edge pliant. I thought she might just leave it at that, but she likes it.

Snow Peas

I have never cooked snow peas before. So I was wary of taking them but I wanted to try cooking something new. In that tug-of-war I cooked the snow peas way too long. Next time, I know I need to cook less. But is it fun to taste home made Chinese. Or is it fun tasting Chinese food at home. all those take-outs. One Chinese take-out that my friend and I will cherish is from the day we were lost and found in Superstition Mountains.

Breakfast cookies We used 3 individual packets of quaker oats and a banana and baked it. Since the packets came with sugar or spice, we didnt have to add any. Handy breakfast and after school snack .

Mint semiya upma

The ratio 2:1 - water to upma I was scolding myself while preparing this, when I couldnt recall the perfect ratio that worked last time. I had made a paste of mint leaves and seasoned it. It tasted minty.  I liked it for its own flavour. But the lack of tamarind and other balancers earned my husband's disapproval. While making samiya, I thought of putting in the mint paste. Once cooked, it was my turn to admire he well coated samiya with specks of mint pesto. instead of peanuts, I added Peas.

La Dolce Vita Biscotti

When I ate this biscotti, it reminded me of milk powder. Dulce. Dolce indeed.

Dinner with Friends

Yesterday while going through the menu of Karaikudi Palace  , I found  kal dosa  interesting. We tried Chicken 65, Chicken tikka naan - I have not tried this before. My husband likes Kheema naan and has to try it at each restaurant. The filling looked colorful with grated kitchen. More spices could have gone into it. Karaikudi Chicken - Buttery but tasted good. Chepala Pulusu - Thicker gravy than we expected but flavorful and the fish was soft.  Lamb curry - I was amazed at the way how a little nudge with fork yielded crisscrossed flakes sticking to the fork. Right next was the Culvers. Friends wanted to have a  scoop of icecream. When we drove around to read Frozen custard in its name, I wanted to try that. I had read of  Frozen custard  that doesnt yield to gravity. So  Frozen custard has eggs in it. I liked it. From where I was seated, I saw ornamental fire melding into the city lights. I could imagine it being a faraway location but it was  The Bamboo Club . We had it

Food and preference

I made toor daal by pressure cooking it in our new pressure cooker which somehow left the lentils still in their form instead of totally mashing it. At home, before pressure cookers,  pappu gutti  did the job of mashing. I let the lentils pass to the next stage of more boiling and a sizzle of seasoning. Endless boiling didnt seem to change the daal's mind. My guest said that he liked the daal to have its form and well, that just might be how we start the tradition of this kind of daal in the house now. My favorite daal story happens to be from m elementary school time when I stayed in a  hostel. It must have been a holiday i.e a sunday thing as we didnt have 5 day weekends then. We had  plain daal for breakfast. Its a liquified version of plain boiled daal and salt. I slipped a word about how I love this daal. The high school students around needed just such a person to finish of the food on their plates. You cant waste the food without facing warden's wrath. In different cu

Lighter

This morning, I was looking for a lighter to switch on the gas stove to make the And then it stuck me, We dont have one. We dont need one. Having just read,  A fork of one's own article, subconsciously, I might have visited my mom's kitchen.

Biscotti

olive oil biscotti  I have been planning to make biscotti for a long time. Two major reasons for making it now. 1. We know someone who likes them in particular 2. I have started enjoying my daughter help me with the 'mix mix mix'... We were watching Elmo's birthday video and that reminded her of 'cake'. So for now all baking leads to cakes. I got her to help me with beating up the eggs. If I dont let her handle something in the name of measuring, she says she wants to measure. While making them, she had a list of people, she wanted to share them with.

Tameloritz

A friend brought this Tameloritz, Albanian rice pudding, while returning the box which had gone with jalebis in it, his way. I was amazed at the rabri or rasmalai kind of consistency of the cream in the rice pudding. Albanians too like Indians, do no return anything empty.

Tofu Butter Masala Pizza

I got to have the Pizza, so I can vouch for the taste and texture of the Pizza. The friend who made gutti dondakaya had this to say about making Tofu Butter Masala Pizza. "One fine Monday evening, I was talking to my friend about our recent trip to Seattle and it stirred up vivid memories of eating the delectable "Paneer Butter Masala Pizza" at the Can Am Pizzeria , Bellevue. It got me thinking so much about it that I decided to try my hand in making pizza and recreate  some of that magic in my home (Phoenix,AZ). I started off with the recipe I found on mehtakhushbu.blogspot.com and tweaked it to my style. I garnered from the blog and other pizza recipes that the general of rule of thumb was to use the paneer butter masala gravy as the pizza sauce and paneer pieces in the curry (in my case tofu) along with other veggies as toppings. In my first trial, I didn't want to risk making pizza base (from the scratch) so I used the ready made one inst
